Microsoft Dynamics NAV MVP Gunnar Gestsson has been a programmer since boyhood. He owned his first computer when he was 13, and quickly began to program data-handling applications. Jump ahead a couple of decades, and he is hard at work as a developer at Microsoft partner Advania , which is headquartered in Reykjavík, Iceland. He has similarly "grown up with" Microsoft Dynamics NAV. After university, Gestsson got a job working with an old IBM system, then he developed Visual ...read more

Hi Tanu, You ask if you should continue working as a Dynamics NAV developer, or jump back to working with Java? So either working with NAV, a specialized skill and industry, something which can only be used in a rather small number of companies, compared to Java, which is used by a lot of companies, but where they are also able to find a replacement for you just by going into the street? Personally I have no doubt. Of course you should stay with NAV! [:)] Otherwise I would not have done more or less the same as I did 25 years ago. But it actually depend on what you like to do? Do you like the business and accounting environment? Do you understand debit and credit? And do you get happy by primary helping businesses improve their ERP processes and secondary by being a technical developer? Otherwise you might just as well work with Java? And when that has been said, then yes Java skills becomes more and more important for NAV developers as well. Even if in rather limited fashion. The next couple of years (releases) we will see a lot of new exiting changes for NAV developers. We have started the migration away from the current C/AL language inside the Development Environment (C/SIDE), towards the new AL language with Visual Studio Code as the code editor. Initially only for Extensions in NAV 2018/365 "Tenerife", but later for everything. Right now the "old" development environment is a big change for developers coming from more "modern" environments like with Java. The gap between Java and AL will become much smaller than now, with C/AL and C/SIDE. Did you know that C/SIDE really means client/server integrated development environment? And again if you prefer an industry and project type with a little more "action", then Java might be better. [:)]

Over the last few months I've really started to wonder if Microsoft executives understand the small to medium business applications space. Is their attention and focus completely enterprise-focused? Is their obsession with matching up against the only competitor they think matters, Salesforce, skewing the thinking too much? Is it dominating their thoughts to the extent that they have become blind to the real competitive threats and priorities of SME-level decision makers?   I'm ...read more

If you ask from me I have seen many people taking transition from NAV to either .NET OR JAVA. I wont go with technical differences between these two because you might have already researched. One thing that I want to address is working in NAV doesn't mean just writing codes as of other technology, if you want to stick to NAV then you need to have transition of your thoughts as well. Here something called business process which always remains on top and eventually you need to grab that first before even you want to be a just good NAV programmer. Working in NAV you will never have saturation because it might be a chances like after couple of years or decades you can say like you a NAV tech expert but as I said there's a core business process involve and that's something which will always remain and you will find something new to learn and understand. Here's a great diversity. Choose your decision very wisely. :)

Sounds like you have adjust costs activated to always, when this is set there are occasions when the batch posts entries back in time and therefore needs to post outside of the posting date restrictions set.
