Navision Attain was the name of the 3rd version of the windows based Navision released in 2001 as [[Navision Financials]]. Version 3.00 had been released as [[Navision Solutions 3.00]]. The recent merger with Damgaard Data, required the new NavisionDamgaard A/S to rethink their branding. The "name" Solutions was a perfect match in the setup where it was the base in a setup with different more advanced versions like [[Navision Manufacturing]] and [[Navision Advanced Distribution]], where Navision was the only true platform. The result soon after the merger was Axapta became [[Navision Axapta]] and Navision Financials/Solutions became [[Navision Attain]]. Besides the name change, then it included a large number of bug fixes over version 3.00. Unfortunately it introduced many more problems than it solved. There were a number of issues with Inventory Costing: Upgrading from 2.60M with lot or serial numbers or using average cost to 3.01 was an almost guaranteed disaster. See new functionality in [[Navision Solutions 3.00]].

Nobody would have thought that could come of the little and very simple accounting system, three college students in Denmark created in 1984. Today owned by the world largest software company and used by 100000's of customers world wide every day under the name Microsoft Dynamics NAV. As time goes, then the story also evolves. Some of the events that were really important when they happened, are today long forgotten. I hope that we can continue updating these pages for many years, and make sure that nothing is forgotten. Just for the fun of it. The Navision adventure starts when the company [[navdev:PC&C|PC&C]] (Personal Computing & Consulting) was founded in 1983 by [[Jesper Balser]], [[Peter Bang]] and [[Torben Wind]]. At that time on they where students at the Danish Technical University (DTU) in Copenhagen, Denmark. PC-Plus (1984) - Finance, Customers, Vendors and Inventory. PC-Plus - the first "Navision" In 1984 the company released their first accounting solution in Denmark & Norway. [[PCPlus|PC Plus]] was a character-based accounting solution for SOHO (small office/home office) market. It was only single user system, but as being fully designed to run on one of the new IBM PC or PC-compatible personal computers. Had had grown in popularity and had for the first time allowed small companies to afford and use computer. Now PC&C had delivered one of the first accounting systems, and the users loved it. (article from Danish Computerworld November 5th, 1985 - "Program becomes the accountants hot Christmas wish) (article from Danish Computerworld November 5th, 1985 - Our ambition is not 117 employees!) Beauty of Simplicity The first company slogan was in use until end of the 1990'ies. It was not just a slogan, but their key to designing software. Despite no longer in use, then its very clear that this slogan still is the very heart of Dynamics NAV. What happened to PC-Plus? The rights to PC-Plus was later sold to one of the biggest PC-Plus partners (?? do you know who, please comment or update) , who with smaller technical updates continued supporting the system to 2010. But there are still many small companies in Denmark who continues to use it in 2015. Save

At [[Microsoft Convergence]] in Copenhagen in November 2008 [[Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009]] was finally released after years of waiting. The new client is released as the [[navdev:Dynamics NAV RoleTailored Client|RoleTailored Client]] and from on the old Windows client was called the [[navdev:Dynamics NAV Classic Client|Classic client]]. Also introduced with Dynamics NAV 2009 was the new form object called [[What are Page objects?|Pages]] and the new [[navdev:What are RoleTailored Client Report objects?|RoleTailored reports]] that you had to design using the RDLC in the Visual Studio Report Designer. Besides a new web client that could be run on almost every browser available, then NAV 2009 contained the SharePoint Framework, allowing you to run NAV within SharePoint. The new web client, released with NAV 2009. [[Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009|Dynamics NAV 2009 SP1]]/Service Pack 1 was released on September 1st., 2009 and [[Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009|NAV 2009 R2]] was released on December 15th. 2010. 2009 R2 included many changes, also some which had not been planed until version 7.0. The long awaited integration between Dynamics CRM and Dynamics NAV and support for Microsoft's application virtualization V-app. The native database could still be used with Dynamics NAV 2009 in a "classic" only setup. But Dynamics NAV 2009 R2 was the last version, where the native database and the classic client could be used. And the same with forms and classic reports.

The huge delays in the release of [[Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009|Dynamics NAV 2009]] was a result of Microsoft's "restructuring" of they development teams. For a number of years it was like Microsoft had almost eliminated most of their core NAV team in Copenhagen. It was very clear to both partners and users, that Axapta was the product Microsoft had their focus on now. Only a hand full of old Navision team were left. But then in 2010 it was like Microsoft again put NAV in focus. At least we saw a new version. (The role center of NAV 2013) Microsoft Dynamics NAV version 2013 [[Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013|Dynamics NAV 2013]] was released on September 28th, 2012. The name of the role-tailored client, is changed to the Windows Client. The classic client is no longer available, but FINSQL.EXE still used as the "Development Environment". RapidStart is the old rapid-imlementation tool, but now changed so much, that it actually became a very good tool for use in data migrations. It is no longer need to write special dataports or xmlports to import data. The release also contained many new application and development improvements. And in many ways, then NAV 2013 was what most partners had expected NAV 2009 to have been. Save

[TOC] Another bite of the SMB market? One of the most successful products in Microsoft is [[Microsoft Dynamics C5|Dynamics C5]]. At least in Denmark. This little hybrid of an old Danish SMB accounting system, once called [[Concorde]] (which grew into XAL and later Axapta), has been the most selling accounting system in Denmark, with more than 50% of the SMB market. For many years Microsoft had tried to copy it's success ([[Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur Solutions|Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur]] in 2007) and find out what to do about C5. Navision was the obvious choice. But if NAV should be a possible choice, then it needed more standard functionality. They had to match both what is in C5 and what their competitors offer in the same price range as out of the box functionality. Just lowering the price would not help, if the customers still had to buy expensive third party add-ons to get bank integration, pdf import/export etc. These add-on modules alone could cost up to 10 times more than the base license for C5. So more standard functionality had to be developed. NAV also needed to become easier to administrate, if partners should be able to handle 1000's of customers at once. Not to mention the well known issue of upgrading customized solutions. How to be able upgrade 1000's of customer at once? Support for [[navdev:PowerShell]] was now also part of NAV 2013. Already with NAV 2009 it had been possible to manage NAV services in NAV 2009 , but now it was also for use in other areas. With NAV 2013 " Microsoft Dynamics NAV Windows PowerShell Cmdlets " was introduced. More PowerShell and functionality in NAV 2013 R2 On October 31st. 2013 [[Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013|Dynamics NAV 2013 R2]] was released. The release was also a goodbye to the Development Environment (aka the classic client) as the place to handle companies and backups. From now on backups and restore was to be handled in SQL, and companies from within the Windows client. The reason was that NAV now supported [[navdev:multi-tenency]], which allows partners (and users) to setup environments where the application (objects etc.) is separate from the data. This way each customer can have it's own database (with multiple companies), but still share the actual application with many other customers. The first release was not the best work from Microsoft. In the beginning there where no way to copy/import-export companies, inside NAV. Except from using [[navdev:PowerShell]], which was introduced with NAV 2013. This came to a complete surprise and resulted in a lot of complaints especially from the partners and developers. But they worked fast, and had many online "firefighting" meetings with the [[MVP|NAV MVP]]'s. The R2 release also contained an entirely new [[navdev:Cash Management]] functionality, largely improved [[navdev:Bank Reconciliation]] and standard functions to handle import of bank transactions, including [[navdev:SEPA]] support for debits and credits payments. The initial released included the default setup to most Danish banks, so that it could be part of [[Microsoft Dynamics C5 2014]]. The NAV C5 mini-app [[Microsoft Dynamics C5 2014]] was also released on October 31st. It was a standard out-of-the-box Dynamics NAV 2013 R2, but using a different set role centers (the so-called "mini-app" or small business app) turned it into a much simpler setup and UI, leaving about most of the advanced functions. Build to run in the cloud on a low monthly price - so only available as a "rentable" SPLA license. The actual C5 license was only available in Denmark, but the functionality gained applause and acknowledgement from NAV bloggers ( Mark Brummel / Erik Ernst ) and users, in many countries. The Small Business role center to be used by C5 - SMB/small to midsize business. No orders, only invoicing. NAV 2015 - more improvements The product team continues to listen to the the community of both partners and customers, who for years have had one major problem with Navision. The same thing that made Navision a success, the ability to customize almost every little part of the system, also makes upgrades a very time consuming. And despite good 3rd party tools like [[MergeTool]], then there is really no tools assisting in code upgrades. The result is that many customers never upgrades, beyond the main version they are on. In October 2014 [[Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2015]] was released. Besides the many application improvements, then upgrades was in focus in this release. It contained new data upgrade codeunits and a new set of PowerShell applets enabling partners to automate the whole upgrade process. Including code compare and merge. There is no longer a way around learning to use PowerShell. NAV 2016 - a big release On October 5th. 2015 [[Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016]] was released. The release had a lot of new functionality, but for the geeks and the end-users. The release introduced a new code-editor, replacing the old, which more or less was unchanged since the first Windows version of NAV was release. The new editor introduced IntelliSense similar to what was known in most other development environment, such as Visual Studio. Waldo's blog contains a great description of most of the changes: http://www.waldo.be/2015/10/09/microsoft-dynamics-nav-2016-whats-new/

[TOC] In 2000 the internet bobble had not yet blast. The news and media all talked internet, 24-7-365 and companies wanted their companies to be online. Navision could not be stopped. They even had TV advertising running. https://youtu.be/rEQDWGBgoLM The Navision/Damgaard Merger In November 2000 the two international ERP vendors, both from Denmark, Navision Software a/s and Damgaard A/S (the developers of [[Concorde]], [[Damgaard C4|C4]], [[Microsoft Dynamics C5|C5]], [[Microsoft Dynamics XAL|XAL]] and [[Microsoft Dynamics AX|Axapta]]) merge under the name NavisionDamgaard A/S . ‘The merger between our companies is natural because we can stop competing against each other and instead focus on creating a strong global company for the mid-market. By merging the two companies, we achieve a size and a market position that enables us to participate actively in the current international consolidation in the industry,’ said [[Jesper Balser]], CEO of Navision Software. The question is still if the new NavisionDamgaard now will have the power to really take on the global market for ERP systems. IDG doubt this. When the two former competitors announces their merger, this was a big surprise to most. Primary among the partners on the Damgaard side, who had been used to Damgaard referring to Navision as "the enemy". dynamicsuser.net/.../us_5F00_navisionworld.pdf Navision re-branding #3 In 2001 NavisionDamgaard A/S again changes their name. Nobody can use such a long name. The name is now only Navision A/S. This also includes a re-branding of the product names. Navision Financials becomes Navision Attain. Axapta becomes Navision Axapta, XAL Navision XAL. Something which even today makes a lot of users think that they uses Navision, when they are actually using Axapta, XAL or C5. New versions and new functionality Navision continues to release new versions, where they again and again prove their commitment towards Microsoft and their product portfolio. Navision Financials 2.60 and 2.65 in 2000 In 2000 [[Navision Financials 2.60]] and [[Navision Financials 2.60|2.65]] is released. 2.60 contains lots of new functionality with the new [[Navision Manufacturing]] and [[Navision Advanced Distribution]] sub-versions. And Navision 2.65 continues to improve the SQL Server options made available with [[Navision Financials 2.50]] in 1999. The SIFT-Technology used by Navision did not exist in SQL Server at that time, and caused [[flowfields|flowfield]] calculations to be very slow. In 2000 Navision Financials receives the Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Certification and Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Certification. Navision Solutions and Attain in 2001 In 2001 the new [[Navision Solutions 3.00]] becomes [[Navision Attain 3.01]], before it has be released most countries. Only Navision "group 1 countries" ever see a Navision Solution in their language. Together with Attain they launch [[Navision Commerce Gateway]] based on Microsoft BizTalk Server and [[Navision User Portal]] using Microsoft's Digital Dashboard. The last got them some marketing, but these Dashboards are long forgotten today. Navision re-branding #3 In 2001 NavisionDamgaard A/S again changes their name. Save Save Save

[toc] Navision as you know it Navision Software launches Navision version 3.0 in late in 1989. This was a big change to the previous versions, as it now allowed partners to change the core of the system. Previously it had been just enough open to allow their partners to change certain objects, like reports, forms and tables. Now "everything" was open. As long as you were an IBM BusinessCenter partner and had an "AL-key". Navigator/Navision 3.04 was the only release between 1991 and 1994. The mother of AL Introduced was the new integrated development environment - the object designer. And AL, the new application language. It was a complete application development language using the development language Pascal's syntax. Through the different "objects" all the code related to the actual accounting application was open to the developers. All existing tables, forms, reports, dataports and codeunits, could be changed and new objects created. This allowed partners with an AL-key to do very advanced modifications, compared to both the previous versions (where only reports/batch reports, tables and forms could be created/changed). It was very unique in the market at that time. Navision quickly "won" the Danish market. A few years later Navision's biggest competitor [[Damgaard Data]], introduced their eXtended Application Language in [[XAL]], just to keep up with them. Why Pascal? In the 1980'ies and early 1990'ies Pascal was one of the most popular development language in the world on CP/M and DOS. I all Danish colleges and universities Pascal was the first language they taught you. And Denmark already had another international software success based on Pascal. Compas Pascal, later PolyPascal was the fastest and most popular Pascal compiler created by another Dane [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anders_Hejlsberg|Anders Hejlsberg]]. He later joined Microsoft, where his first job was to create the J++ programming language and the Windows Foundation Classes. Since 2000, he has been the lead architect of the team developing the language C#. Anders is the brother of [[Thomas Hejlsberg]], who since 2003 have been one of the main architects on Microsoft Dynamics NAV. ISV partners emerging There had already been add-on solutions for the previous Navision 2.x, for example an auditor solution. But when AL basically removed all the previous limitations, then this market almost exploded. All partners had their set of add-on's and soon some partners started focusing more on selling through other partners. Among the early "standard" add-on's in Denmark were NaviBanking by Navtilus Software (now [[Continia]]). Other add-on's were acquired by Navision and became part of the standard product. Examples on this is the fixed assets module in version 3. Something they also did later with the foundations for the CRM and advanced warehousing modules also. Navision becomes international The partnership between PC&C and IBM was very successful in Denmark. A success they in 1988 had discussed to extend to a number of European IBM subsidiaries. Due to existing partnerships with local accounting software vendors, IBM decided to decline the opportunity to use Navigator as an IBM logo-product outside of Denmark. 1990 is the year when Navision for the first time becomes available outside Denmark. Local distributors are started in Iceland ([[Fjördiner]]) and Germany (Navigator). Expansion continues beyond Scandinavia and Germany. Spain and the United Kingdom follows. Here the name Navision was used for the first time. Story about how Navision started in Germany The expansion continues up through the 1990'ies. Initially using local independent distributors. Later co-ownership between Navision and the local distributor. IBM continues to be the distributor in what is still the biggest market, in Denmark. Additionally a team from IBM sells a world-wide version of Navision in countries, where Navision Software didn't have a local distributor. In the years before, Navision Software A/S in 1999 enters the Copenhagen Stock Exchange, they had been buying up most of their local distributors. The first war of the graphical user interfaces In the early 1990'ies IBM's OS/2 was technologically superior to Microsoft Windows 3.1, and common by Navision users, as Navision already worked on OS/2. So partners and users was expecting a graphical version of Navision running OS/2. But IBM OS/2 was at least 2-3 years to early for the market. As everybody knows today Microsoft Windows won the first war of the graphical user interfaces. The "second war" ended in 2017, when Microsoft lost the war the SmartPhones OS. This time Microsoft already lost it. Apple and Google continues the fight. Navision for Windows 3.10 prototype In Navision Software had already decided to go the Windows way. At the CeBit trade show in Germany in the Spring of 1993, they show prototype of [[Navision for Windows]]. But it get dropped and we have to wait 2 more years for a true Windows version.

Hi Erik - I tried copystream too, COPYSTREAM(outstream,INSTREAM) what happens is say I have a string Customer no. : 0001 Location Code : L1 Division code : 1234 Tax Area code : R001 Cust. Disc. Group : A001, everything works just fine but when I go to the Notes it just shows Customer no. : 0001 Location Code : L1 Division code : 1234 and the remaining part of Tax area code : R001 and Cust. Disc. Group : A0001 is not there. I am just lost as to what am I missing. I have been scratching my head to resolve this issue, as you know If I go to a customer card and enter notes, I can enter tons of notes but when you update notes through a code, it just restricts to certain characters, not sure why.

That's strange, normally it takes the whole content. What is the code you are using with COPYSTREAM? Don't open the file in writemode, if that doesn't work try without textmode (you just want to copy the whole content right?).

Hi Erik - I tried your way too and still not luck. Below is the code for this task. Some code is remmed trying out all possible ways to get this working. Really..Really strange. Thanks again for all your help Erik. In NewfileName which is called custinfo.txt below is the content Customer no. : 0001 Location Code : L1 Division code : 1234 Tax Area code : R001 Cust. Disc. Group : A001 IF FileMgt.ServerFileExists(NewFileName) THEN BEGIN RecRef.GETTABLE(CustRec); RecordLink.RESET; IF RecordLink.FIND('+') THEN LinkNo := RecordLink."Link ID" + 1 ELSE LinkNo := 1; RecordLink.RESET; RecordLink.INIT; RecordLink."Link ID" := LinkNo; RecordLink."Record ID" := RecRef.RECORDID; RecordLink.URL1 := GETURL(CLIENTTYPE::Current, COMPANYNAME, OBJECTTYPE::Page, PAGE::"Customer Card"); RecordLink.Type := RecordLink.Type::Note; RecordLink.Created := CURRENTDATETIME; RecordLink."User ID":=USERID; RecordLink."To User ID" := GLSetup."CFO Email-ID"; RecordLink.Company:=COMPANYNAME; RecordLink.Notify := TRUE; NewFunction(RecordLink); RecordLink.INSERT; END; LOCAL NewFunction(VAR RecordLink : Record "Record Link") RecordLink.Note.CREATEOUTSTREAM(StreamOutObj); //MyFile.WRITEMODE(FALSE); //MyFile.TEXTMODE(TRUE); MyFile.OPEN(NewFileName); MyFile.CREATEINSTREAM(StreamInObj); IntLen := MyFile.LEN; //WHILE (MyFile.POS < IntLen) DO BEGIN //MyFile.READ(s); StreamInObj.READ(s,MAXSTRLEN(s)); //COPYSTREAM(StreamOutObj,StreamInObj); StreamOutObj.WRITE(s,MAXSTRLEN(s)); //StreamInObj.READTEXT(s); //StreamOutObj.WRITETEXT(s,MAXSTRLEN(s)); //END; MyFile.CLOSE();

Is this the code you tested? The why do you have // before copystream? You also have no create outstream! This example is from Microsoft's own doc page. It copies a file to a file, but the principle is the same. F1.OPEN('c:\Test.txt'); F1.CREATEINSTREAM(InS); F2.CREATE('c:\CopyTest.txt'); F2.CREATEOUTSTREAM(OutS); COPYSTREAM(OutS,InS); F1.CLOSE(); F2.CLOSE();
